Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs)

Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are a class of materials consisting of ceramic fibers reinforced with a ceramic matrix. CMCs are designed to have high strength and stiffness at high temperatures, making them ideal for use in extreme environments such as those encountered in space and astronautical engineering. The ceramic fibers provide the strength and stiffness, while the ceramic matrix protects the fibers from damage and oxidation. CMCs are used in a variety of applications, including rocket nozzles, heat shields, and turbine blades. They offer several advantages over traditional metal alloys, including higher temperature capability, lower weight, and better resistance to corrosion and wear.
